The API gateway: single entry point

Microservices split functionality across many services. Without a gateway, every client would need to know dozens of service addresses, handle authentication for each, and aggregate responses itself.

An API gateway is a single entry point that handles cross-cutting concerns: TLS termination, authentication, rate limiting, routing, and response aggregation.
