Four streaming modes on one connection
gRPC is built on HTTP/2, which multiplexes many streams on one TCP connection. This lets gRPC support four call types: unary (traditional request-response), server-streaming, client-streaming, and bidirectional streaming — all using the same connection and the same protobuf serialization.
Each call type maps to a single HTTP/2 stream with different DATA frame flow patterns.
