Kerberos: trusted third-party authentication

Kerberos (named after the 3-headed dog of Hades) solves a classic problem: how can Alice prove her identity to a file server without her password ever reaching the file server?

Answer: a trusted Key Distribution Center (KDC) issues cryptographically signed tickets. The password is used locally — it never travels the network.
