Distributed tracing: follow a request across services

In a microservices architecture, a single user request may touch 5–20 services. When it's slow or broken, which service is responsible? Distributed tracing answers this by assigning a unique trace ID to each request and propagating it through every service call.

OpenTelemetry is the CNCF standard for tracing, metrics, and logs — one SDK, any backend.
