Power through the data cable

Power over Ethernet eliminates the separate power adapter for network-attached devices. IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, VoIP phones, and door access controls all receive 48V DC through the same Cat5e/Cat6 cable carrying data — no electrician needed, just a PoE switch.

IEEE standardized three generations: 802.3af (15.4W), 802.3at/PoE+ (30W), 802.3bt/PoE++ (90W).
