Why three tiers?

Enterprise networks are divided into three layers to balance scale, performance, and manageability:

Access — where end devices connect. Switches in wiring closets, 1 Gbps ports. Distribution — aggregates access switches, does inter-VLAN routing, enforces policies. Core — high-speed backbone connecting distribution blocks. Minimizes latency, no filtering.
